Sylvester Stallone is hard at work assembling his next team of badasses for The Expendables 3, and has taken to Twitter to drop some hints as to what we can expect from the new film.

“Writing EX3 at the moment,” began the star. “There are going to be mountains of surprises. EX3 needs NEW blood and more humour…. The films were always meant to be more on the humorous side with moments of drama.”

“No S. Seagal, sorry, but maybe we get lucky with J. Chan! And some young bloods!!! By young I mean 22 to 27. Not big bruisers but tech wizard, super brains and a young woman who is not a sex symbol but funny ,tough, REAL.”

All of which is a bit of a departure from previous rumours, in which the likes of Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Nicolas Cage had been linked to the project.

Still, we wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one more dinosaur added to proceedings before the youngsters come aboard.

In his latest “Bullet to the head” Sly shows he’s still got some serious washboard abs even at 66 years old.

Wherever I go, I meet people who want to know how to manage their weight, boost their energy levels and generally get the fires going again in life. It doesn’t matter how intelligent or wealthy or famous they are, the question is always the same: “How can I get in good shape?”

Here are the tried-and-true gym exercises that have kept me going and growing as long as I can remember. I promise you’ll see results after a few short weeks. These step-by-step instructions will guide you through the moves and help you avoid certain classic mistakes. I’ve also included some thoughts on each one.

I realise this might be a little intimidating to you if you’re new to weight training. I completely understand. My advice for beginners is to run through these moves for the first time with a fitness trainer or an experienced friend.

SLY’S AB WORKOUT

 Floor crunches

The move: Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Hold your hands behind your head and roll your upper torso forward as your knees come up toward your elbows. At the top of the crunch, consciously squeeze the abdominal muscles before slowly lowering back for the next crunch. Exhale as you come up, inhale on the way back down.

Sets: 2 sets of 5, 10 or 15; work your way up to 30.

Sly says: Crunches are much more effective than regular sit-ups because they specifically target your upper abdominal muscles rather than your hip muscles. If you’re not used to them, they can cause soreness a day or two later, but it’s a “cool” soreness. A badge of honor.

Tip: If floor crunches are too tough in the beginning, start on the gym’s crunch machine.

Twisting crunches

The move: Lie on the floor with your hands behind your head, your knees bent, and feet comfortably off the ground. Exhale and curl your upper body forward, rotating your elbow toward the opposite knee.

Sets: 2 sets of 5, 10 or 15; work your way up to 30.

Sly says: Fortunately for you, I’m not recommending you get a kid to pound on your stomach while you’re doing them, like I did in those scenes from Rocky II.Twisting crunches target the obliques and upper abdominals, with some secondary benefits for the lower abs. People don’t realize that when they “throw out” their back, it’s often because of weak abs. These muscles are essential for lower-back strength and good posture.

Tip: Resist the temptation to pull on your neck when you’re doing crunches.

Hanging raises

The move: Rest your elbows in the elbow slings or on the support pads (if you’re using the gym’s dip station or hanging chair). Lean back slightly and slowly draw your knees toward your chest as far as possible. Return to the starting position and repeat.

Sets: 2 sets of 10.

Sly says: Incredible exercise for your midsection. Doing it early in your routine gets the exercise juices going and charges you up for the tougher work to come.

Tip: I try to lock the knees and roll my stomach up. If you pull in and roll back instead of lifting the legs straight, you will get a lot more out of this exercise.

Broomstick twists

The move: Set an incline bench with ankle supports at a 45-degree angle. Sit upright on the bench and secure your feet under the supports. Hold a broomstick behind your head and across your shoulders, supported by your outstretched arms. Twist left and right on the axis of the stick, feeling the burn at your core.

Sets: 3 sets of 10.

Sly says: This one gave me the best abs of my life. Later, it really helped get me chiseled for Rambo II and Rambo III. I’ve been using this beauty for years. The secret is the combination of incline and twist, which creates unrelenting contractions that shape the “core,” the set of muscles that includes the lower back, the glutes, the hip flexors, and the mini-mountain range that runs from the abs to the obliques. A powerful core is a kind of anchor that lets you throw farther, swing harder, reach higher, and perform better, especially as you get older. So go ahead: stick it!

Tip: It’s not a sit-up, so don’t bend forward. This is all about the twist.

Sage Moonblood Stallone, the 36-year-old son of Sylvester Stallone who starred alongside his father in “Rocky V,” was found dead in his Hollywood apartment on Friday.  The New York Post confirmed his passing with his attorney George Braunstein.  Sources tell The Post that he likely died of an overdose of pills, and that a representative of the LAPD stated, “There is no suspicion offoul play or criminal activity.”

Sage Stallone was Sylvester Stallone’s eldest son from his first marriage to Sasha Czack (they divorced in 1985).  Sage is survived by his brother Seargeoh, and his three half-sisters Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet.

Sage made his film debut playing Robert Balboa, Rocky’s son, in 1990’s “Rocky V” when he was 14 years old.  The film was both a critical and financial disappointment, with Sylvester Stallone telling The Sun in 2010 that the reason he made the sequel was “I’m greedy — what can I tell you… It was a mistake because the audience didn’t want to see the downside of the character. They wanted him to remain on top.”

Sage also appeared with his father in 1996’s “Daylight,” but that year also saw him give up acting to be one of the co-founders of Grindhouse Releasing.  Along with his partner, Oscar-winning film editor Bob Murawski, Sage Stallone’s company restored and re-released forgotten exploitation films from the 1970s and ’80s. Grindhouse Releasing partnered with Quentin Tarantino to bring Lucio Fulci’s horror film “The Beyond” to screens in 2010.

Reportedly, Sage turned down the chance to reprise his role of Rocky’s son in 2006’s “Rocky Balboa” to focus on his burgeoning career and a director and producer.  The character was played in the sixth film by Milo Ventimiglia (TV’s “Heroes”).

Sylvester Stallone has not yet released a comment.  Just yesterday the elder Stallone appeared at Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA to promote his upcoming action film “The Expendables 2.”  Stallone was joined on stage by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who makes his first appearance since leaving the office as governor of California in the movie.

Over the years Stallone’s training methods and diets have adjusted to suit his roles and improve his results. heres a sample of some of the variations he has employed, along with a few of his own personal observations and revelations…

To begin with, here’s the training schedule Stallone used for Rambo First blood art 2, where he got help from former Mr Olympia Franco Columbu

MONDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY
Morning: Chest, back, abs
Afternoon: Shoulders, arms, abs

TUESDAY/THURSDAY/SATURDAY
Morning: Calves, thighs
Afternoon: Rear delts, traps, abs

On this program Stallone gained 10 pounds of muscle in little over 6 weeks.

The rigorous training would continue in Rocky 3. Stallone went into a murderous training regime, beginning the day with a two mile jog, than 18 rounds of sparring, 2 hours of weightlifting and jumping rope. After all this he would take a nap sometime in the afternoon, after his short nap he went running some more and would finish the day with a swim.

Along with the insanely demanding workout and training routines were even more ridiculous diet regimes.

Low calorie Diets consisting of all protein food, with an occasional potato, just so he wouldn’t faint and 10 egg whites and a burnt piece of toast once a day, and a piece of fruit every third day, were how Stallone ripped his body of all possible fat. The shear willpower to stay on such diets is remarkable.

“I follow a high-protein diet: Anything with a face, that’s what I eat, with something green next to it,”

Nowadays Sly had altered his routine to incorporate more compound lifts and give him more rest days for recovery.

“Over the years, my biggest flaw was overtraining. In the gym six days a week, doing more sit-ups at night … my body was in a constant state of breakdown. Now I focus on a variety of exercises, working out three times a week for 90 minutes per session. I really feel good–much stronger than I’ve ever felt, actually. Something’s working.”
